Around 345 million native speakers and roughly 600 million including second-language use, concentrated across northern India. Spoken Hindi and Urdu are largely mutually intelligible; the split between them is chiefly one of script and formal vocabulary rather than everyday speech.

Devanagari — an abugida, in which each consonant carries a built-in "a" that you either cancel or replace with a vowel mark. It is systematic and phonetically honest, and takes a couple of weeks rather than a couple of days.
Hindi distinguishes dental from retroflex and aspirated from unaspirated, producing four distinct sounds where English has one. क, ख, ग and घ are all "k/g" to an untrained ear, and they build entirely different words.
Hindi is subject–object–verb. "मैं खाना खाता हूँ" is literally "I food eat am". Speaking requires assembling the whole thought before the verb arrives, and it will feel unnatural for months before it stops feeling unnatural at all.

Devanagari is far more regular than English spelling: once you have learned it you can read any word correctly the first time you see it. A large stock of English loanwords is also already in daily circulation, so your first hundred words are half-familiar.
