Around 260 million speakers, the great majority of them Brazilian — so "Portuguese" in practice usually means Brazilian Portuguese. It is also the language of Angola, Mozambique and Portugal, and the European and Brazilian varieties differ far more in sound than on the page.

European Portuguese swallows unstressed vowels almost entirely, so words compress into dense consonant clusters; Brazilian keeps them open and sung. Learners who study one and then travel to the other frequently understand nothing for a fortnight.
Portuguese has a construction most languages simply lack: an infinitive that conjugates for person. "É melhor saíres" — it is better that you leave. There is no English handle to grab it by.

Written overlap with Spanish runs around ninety per cent, and both share a large Latin core with English. If you have any Romance language at all, reading Portuguese is nearly free — which makes the listening gap the entire project.
