What learning Italian actually involves

About 65 million native speakers, overwhelmingly in Italy itself, with substantial communities in Switzerland, Argentina and the wider diaspora. Italian is usually a language people choose rather than need — which quietly changes what motivation looks like once it stops being fun.

How long it takes

One of the fastest languages for an English speaker to reach conversational level in, around 600–750 hours. The sound system is small and consistent and the spelling matches it almost perfectly, so progress is unusually visible early on.

Three things that trip up English speakers

1Double consonants change the word

"Nono" is ninth; "nonno" is grandfather. "Copia" is a copy; "coppia" is a couple. English speakers hear these pairs as identical and produce them as identical. Italians, emphatically, do not.

2The subjunctive, still very much alive

Unlike French, where it is quietly shrinking, the Italian congiuntivo is in daily use and its absence is noticed. It marks opinion, doubt and desire, and it is the clearest line between tourist Italian and adult Italian.

3Pronouns that stack

"Glielo dico" — I will tell it to him — fuses two pronouns into a single cluster in front of the verb. Combining pronouns cleanly is where Italian starts to sound fluent rather than assembled.

Sounds worth getting right early

gli
A palatal l, as in "famiglia". Not "glee" and not quite "lyee" — the tongue lies flat against the roof of the mouth.
gn
As in "gnocchi": one sound, like the Spanish ñ, not a g followed by an n.
open and closed e / o
"Pesca" is peach or fishing depending on the vowel. Regional variation is wide enough that this rarely blocks you — it is simply why your Italian still sounds foreign long after the grammar is sound.

What comes easier than you expect

Italian is the most transparent major language for reading aloud. Learn a couple of dozen letter rules and you can pronounce any word you encounter correctly, without ever having heard it spoken. Very few languages hand you that.

Where Italian stands today

Thoroughly covered everywhere. The scarce commodity is a patient conversation partner, not another vocabulary list.
