From Hello to Keynote: a realistic 90-day speaking plan

Ninety days will pass whether or not you start. Here is what they can realistically buy you in a new language — if you spend ten to fifteen minutes a day and, crucially, spend them speaking out loud rather than tapping silently.

Days 1–14: survive saying anything

The first two weeks have one goal: break the sound barrier. Learn the greetings, introduce yourself, count, name the days. Say every single word out loud — badly is fine, silently is not. By day fourteen you should be able to deliver five sentences about yourself without reading them.

Days 15–45: build the 300-word core

Daily life, food, family, getting around. Three hundred well-chosen words cover a shocking share of real conversation. Drill them with pictures and audio, then immediately use each batch in a short spoken exchange — words that never leave your mouth never become yours. Somewhere in this stretch comes the first magic moment: you answer a question without translating in your head first.

Milestone one, around day 30: order a coffee entirely in the language. No English lifeline.

Days 46–75: hold real conversations

Now the reps change: fewer word drills, more whole conversations. Order a meal, ask for directions, describe your weekend, complain about the weather. This is also when pronunciation work pays off most — you have enough vocabulary that being understood, not just producing words, becomes the game.

Days 76–90: say something that matters

Finish with a stretch goal: a two-minute “keynote.” Prepare a short talk — who you are, why this language, one story — polish it, memorize it, and deliver it out loud, start to finish. It is a party trick, but it is also proof: ninety days ago you could not say hello.

Fluency is not a finish line. It is the day speaking stops feeling like a performance.

The honest math

  • Ten minutes a day for 90 days is 15 hours of speaking — more output than most classroom learners produce in a year.
  • Daily beats double-length every-other-day. The streak is the strategy.
  • You will plateau around week six. Everyone does. It lifts if you keep talking.
  • A patient conversation partner — human or AI — matters more than any textbook after day 30.

AvalaVoice runs this exact arc: video-guided first lessons, illustrated word drills, live AI conversation with in-the-moment coaching, pronunciation scoring, and speech memorization for the keynote at the end. The first five minutes a day are free — which happens to be exactly what the plan needs.
